Sweets is a Geordie poet and musician. Having lived a turbulent youth in the Northern city of parties and loudmouths, Sweets’ past was characterised by the omnipresence of trouble. His latest single ‘SEIZURE’ is out now and we caught up with him here:

What is your earliest musical memory?

My earliest passionate musical memory was, as most of them were, listening to hip hop in my dad’s car. He played me 808s and heartbreak on repeat and handlebars by flobots and they became part of me straight away.

When did you begin songwriting?

I wrote my first rap around 11 years old! I can still remember the first 4 bars and for some reason they mention Saddam Hussien.

You have your new single ‘Seizure’ out now. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?

I learned I have epilepsy (the hard way) at 24 years old! I was making food and woke up with a fractured skull, amnesia, a loss of hearing and a lacerated mouth. It was dormant in me until that point and from then on I had about 10 seizures before controlling it. One of which I had whilst recording vocals in the studio. I made this song to kind of make light of it all!

Who produced the track?

It was produced by my talented mate wudini.

Is the single accompanied by a visualiser?

I bought a camcorder at the time of release and experimented hard with it. Look on my socials @sweetconnector

Which of your new tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?

Funnily enough – I think seizure is, whilst tackling the most serious personal hurdle I’ve ever faced, the song of mine with the least depth of all of them! I feel like I used rap norms / ‘bars’ as a way of bringing levity to it. And after all epilepsy is not a particularly pervasive or thought provoking thing, I thought, just something that came with raw emotion. On HOCKEY PUCK I am at my most reflective and on CRACK BABY I am angriest.

Do you have any further music releases planned for 2025/2026?

Hohyes.

What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?

I hope to have made a community-wide impact in regard to mental health/ emotional education for young people and had a threesome.

Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?

Newcastle Upon-Tyne. Pretty, funny, claustrophobic (at least at my age), close, cushty

Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?

I’ve always been influenced lyrically by Mike Skinner, Frank Ocean, Bjork, Erykah Badu, Kendrick and soul music in general. And I want to recommend my friend’s pollyfromthedirt and Deki Alem.

What makes Sweets happy and what makes you unhappy?

Creating of any kind and Dtaffies and noticing simple things that I like makes me happy! Feeling directionless makes me unhappy.
