The Bitter Mass is the project of Andy Clare, Dom Grace and Martyn Wilson — three friends making thoughtful, emotionally charged songs rooted in their working-class upbringing in South Leeds. As they release the single ‘Anywhere Girl’ the band spoke to us about the track, their hometown and more:

Who is in The Bitter Mass, how did you meet and what do you play?

Andy Clare – plays everything, Martyn Wilson – lead guitar, Dom Grace- rhythm guitar. I met Andy via his brother and discovered a shared musical interest. I’ve known Martyn forever.

What is your earliest musical memory?

I’ve got a big brother who was really into Santana so I think they are. Andy: Dad’s Beatles and Beach Boys records.

When did you begin songwriting?

Just a few years ago as this songwriting unit. Andy; I started at seven.

You have released your latest single ‘Anywhere Girl’. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?

I’d read something that said the nation was split politically between somewheres and anywheres – people who were very rooted in their location and people who were ready to upsticks and go wherever.

Where did you record the single and who produced it?

At Andy’s and he produced it.

Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?

Keeping dogs away from causing canine havoc is a constant theme.

Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?

Nothing specifically of note or out of the ordinary.

Which of your tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?

Despite the end results I think we’re always happy working on songs.

Was it a difficult song to write?

Andy’s a perfectionist on the musical side so the difficulty is getting an end product that he’s happy with.

Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?

Leeds. Gritty, warm, funny, tough, tender.

How do you look after your voice?

That’s one I’ll let Andy answer. Andy: stopped smoking. Drink plenty of fluids.

Do you have any live dates planned in the UK/Europe in 2025/2026?

Watch this space. Plans are taking shape.

What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?

Done ourselves justice and found our tribe

You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?

Catcher In the Rye because it’s the best book that doesn’t already have a film adaptation.

Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?

Hundreds of influences. Me and Andy are huge Jason Isbell fans. I love singer/songwriters and, surprisingly perhaps, soul music. Andy likes a hue variety too. Currently into Sons of the East

What makes The Bitter Mass happy and what makes you unhappy?

I think music is the thing we all love.
