This winter the multi-platinum-selling vocal group The Overtones will embark on Ultimate Christmas Party Tour. As they are celebrating their 15th Anniversary as well, Darren Everest chatted to us:
What is your earliest musical memory?
My earliest memory would be my Dad playing The Beatles in the car. I didn’t appreciate them back then but he’d be going on about how amazing there were etc etc
Obviously I understand now!
You are celebrating your 15th anniversary in music congratulations. What are some of your career highlights/memories?
Wow it’s been crazy. So many unbelievable memories but as a London boy I’d have to say headlining The London Palladium is a hard one to beat. So many legends have stood on that stage and to have a packed house with family and friends there was something that will be hard to beat.
In addition, you will be embarking on a 17-date UK Tour in November/December 2025. How are you feeling about the tour and do any of the venues/locations hold any personal significance for you?
To be honest we weren’t sure if a Christmas Tour was gonna happen this year but we had a chat between us and said we needed to do it. Everyone says it’s their official start to Christmas and it’s a special time to tour the country and see everyone. Let’s be honest The Overtones & Christmas just works. It’s a beautiful love story – we can’t live without each other lol
Given your extensive back catalogue, is it difficult picking a setlist? Do you have a specific song selection process?
Yeah it’s become very tough to choose a setlist now whether it’s for a headline show or a private booking (yes we’re available for private parties etc haha!) but it’s a lovely problem to have because we have such a strong catalogue to choose from.
We always have a template of feel good vibes and getting the audience up dancing, but we do chop and change from time to time to keep it fresh.
Which of your tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?
You to Me Are Everything is a song that makes me feel happy for sure. I often look at my fiancée and daughters when they are in the audience when we perform that. We don’t have a song that makes me feel angry – come on we’re The Overtones not slipknot!
I’d say Moon River is a song that makes us reflect. We dedicate it to people that us and the audience have loved and lost and it does get emotional. It’s beautiful at the same time.
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
My home town where I grew up is Gants Hill in Ilford, Essex. I’d say safe, happy, loved, friendly and the last word is the cinema cost£2.50 back then haha
How do you look after your voices?
Well at the start of Tour you have to be careful and have hot drinks, rest correctly, and have nice warm ups before the show. These are all things that still matter as the tours goes on but you do build up vocal stamina and your voice gets used to it.
What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?
I always want to come off stage having had the best time myself first and foremost and secondly making sure the audience has had the best nigh possible. If we can’t enjoy this then we shouldn’t be doing it and it’s all about us 4 having fun. It’s definitely infectious.
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?
The beautiful thing about an Overtones show is we just need 4 mics and 4 mic stands. We always try our hardest to get everyone up dancing and having the night of their lives! It’s something we pride ourselves on.
You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?
Oh wow what a question. Well my Fiancee has just finished writing a film/novel so I’m gonna say that. I don’t think I’m allowed to mention the name though sorry!
Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?
I grew up on 90s R&B mainly American groups and singers. Soul and Motown was always being played – The Jackson Five etc but I also loved Boyz II Men, Blackstreet, Dru Hill, 112 etc. Crag Davids 1st album ‘Born to do it’ definitely made a big impression on me as did the Donell Jones album ‘Where I Wanna Be’.
What two pieces of advice do you have for a novice vocalist?
The first thing I’d say is ENJOY. It’s something that can be left behind as the pressure rises and it all becomes a bit serious. It’s music. It’s supposed to be fun so it’s important to never forget that.
I’d also say don’t get in your own head too much and trust that you’ve got this and remain calm and breathe.
Do you have any new music releases planned at all for 2025/2026?
YES. We’ve been in the studio with Grammy award winning writer Eliot Kennedy. He has written some massive hits that you’ve heard on the radio over the years and it’s such an honour to be working with him. New music coming soon!
What makes The Overtones happy and what makes you unhappy?
What makes us happy is being on stage and seeing our audience have the best time. Ours shows are escapism for everyone including us. For that 75 minutes or however long we’re onstage – we want them to just be singing, dancing and having the best time!
The hard part is definitely being away from our families. Especially now we have children. It’s tough not seeing them for a few weeks at a time.
