Over 50 years after his passing, Jimi Hendrix continues to be one of the most loved musicians ever known, and it’s proven with the release of a new collection of beauty products in his image. Beauty may not be something that the legendary guitarist is known for, but as there has been a seemingly never-ending list of other things utilising his name, then, well, why not?
Naturally, the guitar is the star of the collection with the fantastically named Voodoo Chile Artistry palette, which is named after the track with the intro that Far Out Magazine listed as one of the 20 greatest of all time. Although the palette is in the image of a Gibson Les Paul, and Hendrix recorded the original with a Fender Bassman, some may scoff, but the design choice is justified as true Hendrix fans will know that he was the owner of a custom’56 Les Paul. Semantics aside, the release of the latest collection of products is just another demonstration of how popular he is and how his constant depiction across a whole range of media has kept him in the mind’s eye of people for so long.
Recordings of Hendrix’s appearances on stage at Woodstock in 1969 are still available on DVD, TV programs have been made as recently as 2018 about ‘The Day the Rock Star Died,’ and he’s been immortalised in digital media too. People can head online to watch him at the Newport Festival on YouTube, and he was introduced into gaming circles when game developers Activision brought his image and music to the Guitar Hero World Tour. There’s even a game from Foxy Games bearing his likeness, titled Jimi Hendrix Online Slot, and can you believe his music is available on the Disney game Fantasia: Music Evolved? This game utilises the Kinect sensor on the Xbox, which has the gamer following an onscreen silhouette to move to the music; it’s a strange psychedelic experience, but swaying to ‘Fire’ certainly fits the bill. That track is just one of a long list of memorable and momentous hits, highlighting why Hendrix remains so revered to this day.
Although he is a worldwide recognised artist, and his music means so much to so many, it’s odd to think he only had one record make it into the top 40, and it wasn’t even one of his own! All Along the Watchtower was written by Bob Dylan, and Hendrix worked his magic on it to release it some eight months after Dylan introduced it to the world. The impact of the re-release was such that it performed better than the original, and it led Dylan to concede that Hendrix took it to another level and who are we to argue?
Even though he wasn’t a commercial smash hit, his guitar mastery remains legendary; Hendrix is constantly referred to as one of the best guitarists ever. His skill with the axe is awe-inspiring to watch, and he’s one of the few artists to have a chord named after him. But now, rather than replicating his sound, you can also cover yourself in a literal Purple Haze of your own, thanks to the release of this latest beauty range.
