Dan Patlansky – Fetch Your Spade (Single) Music Video

Dan Patlansky is a South-African blues-rock guitarist who has recently released his new studio album ‘Dear Silence Thieves’ and at Just Listen To This we have reviewed the album, his live album launch at The Borderline and Dan was also kind enough to take part in our ’20 Questions With…’ feature.

He has opened for ‘The Boss’ Bruce Springsteen in his home country and he will return to the United Kingdom as the special guest to Joe Satriani’s Shockwave  UK Tour in November this year so he is certainly gaining kudos among the guitar alumni. After the rocking radio-friendly ‘Backbite’, Patlansky returns with his second single ‘Fetch Your Spade’ which he has created a music video for.

The video was filmed in the South African outback as Dan and his power rock trio just set up amplifiers and instruments to rock our socks off. Before anything else, I must mention that it is not about the trials and tribulations of gardening so the green-fingered among you may be disappointed with the video’s lack of shrubbery.

Anyway, the black and white video is filled with dark themes as Dan sings ‘I’m a social amputee!’ whilst an attractive brunette burns a photograph and straight away questions start swirling around your head: ‘Why is she burning the photograph?’, ‘Is the photograph of Dan?’and ‘How did they find a power source in the outback to handle all their gear?’ Joking aside, the really great thing about Dan is the fact that he creates such a kick-ass rock sound without needing to pose or pretend. The lead vocal is strident, almost beligerent;

The song is based on a grinding Hendrix/Groundhogs riff set against blissed-out interludes for dynamic effect. In terms of lyrics though it is extremely original and the softer acoustic parts of the track show both a light and shade effect to his material. During the guitar solo he doesn’t disappoint as he lets loose on his battered Fender Stratocaster  with such precision and ease. The drummer and bassist keep the heavy rock going and having seen them live they really give it 110%.

I know that we live in an age now where the single is key, especially with the ability to download individual tracks, but the album ‘Dear Silence Thieves’ as a whole is a consistent body of work that is filled with gems such as ‘Fetch Your Spade’ and ‘Backbite’.

The video is clever and the cinematography is flawless but if you really want to see what this guy is all about go and see him play live later this year because even though the media can draw comparisons with Satriani, Bonamassa and others, Dan Patlansky is his own man and I commend that.
