Heavyman — Beautiful Place EP
Heavyman are a four-piece London-based hard rock band Their debut EP ‘Beautiful Place’ opens with ‘Baby Jean’ with a punchy rock electric guitar riff from Nick Burns as a pulsating drumbeat pours out the speakers. A solid start gentleman.
‘Something You Own’ is a number that allows lead vocalist Charlie Yang to showcase his clear lead vocal and rock ‘n’ roll swagger. I’m reminded of the debut album by Birmingham rockers Broken Witt Rebels as they too blend rock with hints of Psychedelia. This allows the listener to hear both sides of Heavyman; the musical light and shade.
The Sci-fi robotic intro segueing into the sound of broken glass sets the scene for ‘Out Of My Head’ as Igor Fonseca’s driven bass dances with drummer Tom Papaloizou’s percussive chug. Lyrically, the song tells the story of either a person that is so ingrained in your mind that you cannot get them out. They have managed to musically convey that frantic feeling perfectly.
Based on the American English idiom “Loose lips sink ships” which originated on a propaganda poster during World War II, ‘Loose Lips’ has cleverly applied it to 2021 with references to mobile phone notifications and false information that dominates the world today.
The electric guitar on ‘Pigs’ is reminiscent of ‘Cut Myself In Two 2’ by Brazilian rock band Black Drawing Chalks and I wonder if Heavyman are fans. This number has real potential as a live set opener with the crisp vocal and tight rhythm section keeping things heavy.
The EP closes with the title track complete with a falsetto that at times has a Matt Bellamy-Esque quality that is easy on the ear and floats on a bed of guitar like a feather.
To summarise, Heavyman is a no-holds-barred rock adventure that will appeal to fans of Muse, Toseland and Rival Sons with its quality production and tongue-in-cheek material. The band has been able to craft the songs in such a way that each member’s talents are on clear display which is how it should be. Here is hoping some live gigs and a future LP are on the cards.
