Joanne Shaw Taylor – All The Way From America (Single)
British blues-rock artist Joanne Shaw Taylor has had a steady stream of single releases in 2023 “Sweet ‘Lil Lies’, “Black Magic” and “Wild Love” through Joe Bonamassa’s Journeyman Records. Her last single release of 2023 is the song ‘All The Way From America’ which is originally by Joan Armatrading and was chosen and produced by Kevin Shirley (Iron Maiden, Joe Bonamassa, George Benson).
The song was originally released by Joan Armatrading in 1980 in the UK as the second single from her ‘Me Myself I’ album. Whilst she is a very private person, when she was previously asked about the track in an interview by Song Facts she explained “That song was somebody who was in America who was trying to persuade me to go out with them and would call all the way from America when I got back to the UK” (Original interview can be found here and is credited to Carl Wiser at www.songfacts.com: https://www.songfacts.com/blog/interviews/joan-armatrading )
Returning to Joanne’s version, her lead vocals are smooth and clearly convey the emotive lyrics as she sings “You called all the way from America, but my heart couldn’t stand the pain of that promised love.”
However, the production seems a bit too slick with acoustic guitar and saloon bar-esque piano that reminds this writer of a Rod Stewart number. The truly frustrating thing is that she is a highly-skilled songwriter as is documented in her previous album releases including her debut album ‘White Sugar’ (2009), ‘Diamonds In The Dirt’ (2010) and ‘Reckless Heart’ (2019) amongst other releases.
Unfortunately, I am unable to find out more information about the band personnel on the track but the full-band sound works well alongside the guitar tone.
In conclusion, I am looking forward to Joanne Shaw Taylor’s new album release scheduled for 2024 to hear more of her original material backed by some cool cat session musicians which is when this star truly shines.
