Lucy-May – Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me (Single)
Singer-songwriter Lucy-May is no stranger to us at JLTT, having previously covered her second album ‘Little By Little’. She has a brand new single called ‘Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me’ and has opted to give it the acoustic treatment.
Lyrically, ‘Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me’ has May in a reflective mood as she sings “If anyone should ever write my life story, for whatever reason there might be” as she feels that this one person in her life is a significant person in her life. Interestingly, the way the track has been written leaves it open to interpretation e.g. she could be singing about her other half but she could also be singing about a child or a close pet. When someone can write something that can connect with people on several different levels, that’s when you know that you have a potential hit song.
The acoustic arrangement works well with Lucy’s voice and her vocal tone reminds me at times of Ward Thomas with its soft delivery. The guitar reminds me of Carole King’s ‘You’ve Got A Friend’ blended with a bit of Norah Jones. I think if she wanted to segue into ‘Don’t Know Why’ during a live set it could work quite well.
In conclusion, Lucy-May has embraced her Motown and roots music influences to create a finished product that has mass appeal and if you enjoy the music of artists such as The Carpenters, Harriett or the aforementioned Norah Jones then this is the perfect tune to accompany a summer’s day.
