Maddie & Tae
Girl In A Country Song (Single)
(Dot Records)
This light-hearted cut by US late-teen duo Maddie & Tae was a gentle dig at the contemporary ‘bro-country’ strand of music and hit No 1 on the Billboard Country Singles chart as nods of favour came in from Rolling Stone, David Letterman and Entertainment Weekly.
They look the part, certainly – all blond locks and brilliant blue eyes – so maybe resistance is futile. The guitar/banjo intro is steady and emphatic, the lead vocal sets the scene and describes basically being a hit on. Can they really be surprised? But as their own push on Girl Power, or whatever it’s called this week and a rebuff to pushy, over-confident and over-assertive males this song makes its mark. The fiddle careens in halfway through and sounds well-recorded.
I have heard a lot worse finger-wagging songs, the artists sing well and the backing band are on the money. There’s likely a lot more to this duo than this tongue-in-cheek ditty but for now, this is an enjoyable listen. And the laugh at the end is a heart-softener in itself. Dare I look up the video?
