Cousin Harley — Let’s Go
Let’s Go is the seventh release from Canada’s hillbilly trio Cousin Harley and was recorded in early Spring 2020 at Afterlife Studios in Vancouver. Led by Gretsch endorsee Paul Pigat who not only wrote every song on the record but also produced, we begin with ‘Right Back At Blues’ that just swings with Keith Picot’s double bass and Jesse Cahill’s drum tone as the fluid rhythm section.
The title track is a highpoint with lyrics that sound like they are from Lemmy of Motorhead if he recorded and album with the Stray Cats! ‘Rained Like Hell’ includes harmony vocals from Marc L’Esperance who also had album mastering duties. Pigat’s technical ability is clear on this album and if you enjoy the guitar stylings of Darrel Higham and Jeff Beck then you will appreciate what Cousin Harley has to offer.
‘Dancing For Bobo’ is an instrumental that is nothing to do with Aerosmith’s ‘Honkin’ For Bobo’ album and it reminds this scribe of Christmas around a fireplace. ‘Who’s That Lyin’ has a song structure similar to the classic ‘John The Revelator’ with this Punky blues delivery which is then followed by the reflective ‘Gone, Gone, Gone’ about a woman who has left her man.
Closing number ‘Merle The Gypsy’ brings it home with the ferocious train travelling beat instrumental with Pigat’s slick guitar dancing with the driving bass riff and percussive drum sound.
Overall, if you are looking for new hillbilly music delivered with excitement and passion then Cousin Harley is where you will find it.
