Paul Carrack — You’re Not Alone (Single)
Paul Carrack’s talents as a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and songwriter are all over popular music – writing and singing the 1975 Ace hit single ‘How Long’, joining the band Squeeze in 1981 with the successful ‘East Side Story’ album that included the radio hit ‘Tempted’, joining Mike Rutherford’s new project Mike + The Mechanics and having several hit songs including ‘Over My Shoulder’, ‘The Living Years’ amongst others as well as his solo career which has seen Carrack release music independently on his own label Carrack-UK.
With his touring plans delayed and rescheduled due to Covid-19, Paul Carrack set to work in his recording studio in March 2020 during the first UK national lockdown, where he wrote, recorded and produced every track on his forthcoming album ‘One On One’ which is scheduled for release in June 2021. Not to mention, he played every instrument as well!
The soft piano introduction glides smoothly into the lead vocal as he croons “When you need a shoulder you can cry on, I’ll be there to wipe your tears away” to set the scene for this emotionally charged song. The light drumming tone blends perfectly with crisp electric guitar and at times the song’s production reminds me of Canadian hit-maker Bryan Adams.
The themes of togetherness and providing support to a loved one or friend are not only heart-warming but also relatable especially right now. Carrack has this ability to write stunning songs about the human condition that can have you smiling one minute and crying the next and ‘You’re Not Alone’ is no exception.
In conclusion, ‘You’re Not Alone’ is one tune in a long line of Paul Carrack music gems and is not only an exciting sign of what is to come with ‘One On One’ but one of my favourite songs of the year so far.
