Tally Koren – Magical Powers EP

by | May 1, 2021

I remember when Dad had returned from a busy day in London a couple of years ago as I said to him after a day’s work “What did you get up to today?” I asked. He replied “Well, I was invited to see a new singer-songwriter called Tally Koren perform live at The House of Lords!” he beamed smiling like a Cheshire cat.

Imagine my surprise then, when we receive a friendly email detailing a new release from the same lady entitled ‘Magical Powers’ EP. The EP is based on a series of poems of hope from children across the globe and was recorded at the world-famous Abbey Road Studios and co-produced by Phil Curran (Tears For Fears).

The set opens with an acoustic version of the title track – which is drawn from a poem written by a thirteen-year-old called Kezia Blaine. The easy on the ear arrangement suits Koren’s emotionally charged vocal as textured strings and piano dance alongside acoustic guitar. “We’d open pathways that didn’t exist, teach people to let go and forgive” she sings softly. The track sounds reminiscent of a Tony Visconti-produced David Bowie track and is a powerful opener.

The slick production on ‘Give Us Sunshine In The Rain’ is on full display with harmonious backing vocals whilst ‘Long To Change The World’ might appeal to fans of singer-songwriter and musician Katie Melua. I will admit that when I heard the children choir I did share a bit of a tear.

Closer ‘Dark Hand Light Hand’ deals with the topics of intolerance and prejudice and how it would be better if people with differences joined together. This is an interesting track because I swear my ears can hear the tune of Christopher Cross’s ‘Arthur’s Theme’ but it is subtle. Tally’s lead vocal floats like a majestic dove and allows the lyrics to breathe so that they can be embraced by the listener.

In conclusion, ‘Magical Powers’ is a strong body of work that causes you to just stop and think for a moment about the world around us. No agenda, no gimmicks, no aggressive guerrilla marketing campaign; just the perfect opportunity for some reflection. A beautiful heart-warming offering.
