Steve Balsamo – Snow Angels (Single)

Vocalist and musician Steve Balsamo has been very busy in 2023 with not only his his solo music and collaborative projects but also his work with Grand Ambition at the Swansea Grand Theatre in Swansea, South Wales.

Given how active he is Wales and beyond, it was a very pleasant and welcome surprise to hear his new Christmas single entitled ‘Snow Angels’.

The song was actually co-written about two years ago on Zoom during the lockdown periods with Balsamo working with fellow Welsh singer-songwriter Darren Parry and English singer-songwriter Josh Gleaves.

In terms of the song’s powerful production, they enlisted the talents of Andrew Griffiths (AGM Productions) who created an ethereal orchestral arrangement which adds a festive backing without being overly-syrupy sweet musically.

Steve Balsamo recorded his lead vocal in Griffiths studio in the Swansea Valleys whilst Darren, Andrew and Steve provided all the backing vocals/harmonies you hear, including the ‘choir’.

Lyrically, ‘Snow Angels’ paints images in your mind of people making snow angels on a snowy winter day (A snow angel is a design, made in fresh snow, by lying on one’s back and moving one’s arms up and down, and one’s legs from side to side, to form the shape of an angel). We are taken through the story of a relationship between two people during the Christmas season with the chorus being something of a metaphor.

I must admit dear reader that whilst I am not the biggest fan of Christmas music personally, I understand and appreciate not only the time and effort it can take to create one but also the comfort and memories that it can bring people at a time which for many is incredibly difficult and emotionally draining.

The lead vocal is impressive as Steve Balsamo’s full vocal range and control is on display for all to hear. I’m reminded of his solo performance of ‘Gethsemane” from the production of Sir Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ on which he donned the loincloth in the role of Jesus Christ for theatre audiences in the West End.

In conclusion, ‘Snow Angels’ is a beautifully written and uncomplicated Christmas song which is not trying to sell you the latest toy, boast about gluttonous feasts, or guilt-trip you into how everyone else is having a super smashing lovely time and you are not. It is dealing with the topic of love – pure and simple.

A magical release that I believe will become an addition on Christmas playlists for years to come.
