Alluring heavy metal road warriors, Silk Spinster, charge forward with their self-titled debut EP, which arrives on Friday 1st August 2025. The band sat down with JLTT:

Who is in SILK SPINSTER, how did you meet and what do you play?

Greetings, I am KYANTULA, lead vocalist of SILK SPINSTER. We are made up of, SINZZ on Bass, THE BOY, on Drums and RIFF LORD on Guitar. We met through different means. RIFF LORD was recruited by KYRANTULA due to his guitar mastery, plain and simple. The LORD knew of SINZZ so that’s where his story began with us and THE BOY…well he just showed up in a cardboard box one day on our doorstep. I’ll be the one answering questions today, it’s great to talk to you.

What is your earliest musical memory?

Heavy metal’s been in my blood since day one. The real game-changer, though, was hitting Download Festival at 15—that experience lit a fire in me that’s never gone out. The world’s moved on in a lot of ways, but that fire? Still burning strong. I’ve always felt this is what I was meant to do. From the start, the goal wasn’t just to make music—it was to build a whole world around it. I got lucky and crossed paths with others who shared that same drive. That’s how SILK SPINSTER was born—out of a shared vision and solid friendships.

When did you begin songwriting?

Probably around the age of 20/21 – which is rather late I know. I didn’t have the confidence to allow myself to dry until then, but I’m glad I did.

You have released your latest single ‘Rockstar’. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?

ROCKSTAR follows the tale of a self-absorbed, arrogant wannabe rock god who thinks he can charm a woman at his local dive. Spoiler: it ends with him sprawled on the pavement, spitting blood and regret. For the video, we stumbled across a grimy little bar out in the wasteland of the northeast. Found a camera—we’ll say found—and just hit record. Mixed in some shots of us playing for good measure. I handle all the filming and editing myself. Not exactly a common skill out here in the dust and ruin.

The single is accompanied by an official music video. What was the thought process behind the video and who directed it?

The whole set was pieced together in my workshop—every bolt, backdrop, and weird prop a result of hard work. As with anything worthwhile, it came together because everyone pitched in. While I wrestled with post-production for what felt like an eternity, the rest of us kept the team spirit alive—offering “moral support” (read: heckling) and the occasional helpful nudge. From behind the camera to the cutting room floor, I wore every hat: filming, directing, editing, and doing all the post-production wizardry. It was chaos, but it was our chaos—and somehow, it worked.

You have your new self-titled EP released on Friday 1st August 2025. How did you want to approach the making of the album?

This EP has been a long time in the making—it’s the first real window into the world of SILK SPINSTER. These tracks are our foundation stones, some of the very first songs we wrote together, and now we finally get to share them the way they were meant to be heard. Think of it as a doorway into something much bigger. We’re building an entire world here, and this is just the prologue.

Each track tells its own story:

MIDNIGHT LIFE is basically a slasher flick set to music—fast, vicious, and dripping with menace.
SILK SPINSTER, our title track, follows a long, brutal journey through the wasteland to take down a monstrous creature… or maybe it’s just a gig. Depends who you ask.
WHITE LINES isn’t about road markings—let’s just say it takes a darker turn.
HOME slows things down. It’s a moment of reflection about love, loss, and the feeling of drifting without an anchor.
FEEL YOUR FEAR captures those long, restless nights where your thoughts spiral and sleep never comes.
And ROCKSTAR? That one’s a cautionary tale—what happens when your ego writes cheques your face can’t cash.

All of it lives inside our apocalyptic landscape. It’s raw, it’s real, and hopefully gives listeners something they can really bite into while we keep forging the next chapter.

Where did you record the EP and who produced it?

We recorded it in the wasteland workshop of Max ‘Howling Mad’ Howlett. He also produced it. He’s phenomenal at his job and we only have to pay him in an assortment of small rodents.

Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?

We’re also recording an album. In one of the sessions for a cover we’re recording, all will be revealed in time – don’t worry, we have a false ending to the song. At this moment, it is the drummer, THE BOY, who starts the song again. However, for some strange reason, RIFF LORD, possessed of some strange impulsive creativity, started to play a long droning pick slide on his guitar. Outraged – the drummer yells “WHAT THE F*CK ARE YOU DOIN” in his far from gentle northern accent. This usually would have been inaudible – he’s a drummer after all, no vocal mics in the booth with him. But due to the relative silence his voice was picked up on the drum mics. So now a quiet, albeit, very angry protest can be heard. We found it funny and kept it in the final cut.

Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?

Whatever we can scrape together in the wastes; and whatever Max “Jostle a Bear” Howlett insists upon.

Which of your new EP tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?

Happiest: Rockstar probably, not lyrically ‘Happy’ but the tune is anthemic and fun!

Angriest: Midnight Life, it’s about murder- so…yeah.

Most Reflective: Home. A song about lost love and betrayal.

Was it a difficult EP to write?

Not particularly. Long but not ‘difficult’. It’s a collection of tracks we have written since the beginning.

Who designed the EP artwork?

That would be the amazing Gareth Sleigholme at Hesir Artwork. He’s amazing. Words don’t do his work justice.

Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?

Hull. It’s. Our. Home. Town.

How do you look after your voices?

I’m pretty stringent about my routine when gigging or recording. All the stuff you’re meant to do. Don’t eat immediately before tea and water. Very little to no caffeine. No dairy. If you have a cold, lemon and honey and lots of warming up.

Do you have any live dates planned in the UK/Europe in 2025/2026?

We are playing our home town in July and October – check out our website for more info: www.silkspinster.rocks – we are also playing a pretty exciting festival next year, but we can’t talk about that yet.

What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?

That the crowd had fun and that we made some new fans. That’s the main reason for me.

Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?

I like my Shure Wireless SM58. Reliable, sturdy and unkillable. So quite the opposite of me really. I customised it myself, and also use a custom mic strand too – there’s no mistaking my kit.

You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?

The Infinite and The Divine by Robert Rath, any of the Uftak Blackhawk books by Mike Brooks or literally ANYTHING by William King. King, probably being my favorite over all for great books. All of these novels are part of Warhammer’s Black Library and all of them have the same fanciful yet brutal universe as SILK SPINSTER. That being said, King writes lots of different things, I love his prose and the tone of his writings.

Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?

Bruce Dickinson and Rob Halford have been huge influences for me—not just for their vocal power, but for the sheer presence and conviction they bring to everything they do. But my inspirations stretch way beyond that. Bands like Type O Negative, Dio, Ghost, Korn, and Slipknot all left their mark on me in different ways. It’s a wide spectrum, and I like it that way.

Outside of music, I’ve always been deep into fantasy and sci-fi—Warhammer (both Fantasy and 40k), Halo, Lord of the Rings… that kind of epic, sprawling world-building has a big impact on how I approach things creatively. For me, it’s never just been about writing songs—it’s about building a whole world around them. Something bigger than us, something people can get lost in. Recommendations? I’m gonna shout out some ‘smaller’ bands here. Faetooth, Autonym, Liberty Slaves, Tailgunner, Victorius. I could go on, but that’ll see you through for now. I say ‘smaller’ they’re all bigger than us, but we’re not talking multi-millionaires y’know?

What makes SILK SPINSTER happy and what makes you unhappy?

What makes us happy is having a good crowd and having people listen to our stuff and enjoy it. It’s always an honour and so much fun. Unhappy? Injustice. Whether it be in the music industry or in everyday life. Good things happen to bad people and good people seem to get spat on far too often, be it by the actions of others or sheer bad luck. That’s life eh.
