Brit Award winner, Grammy nominee, and lead singer of iconic pop group, FIVE STAR – Deniece Pearson returns with a brand-new single – ‘Like A Child’. She chatted to us about the track, her voice and more:
What is your earliest musical memory?
I think we were all living in an apartment at the time and Del was a baby, so I was must have been around 3-4yrs crawling under a table to get something as toddlers do and this song came on the radio – stopped me in my tracks! I was sitting on the kitchen floor looking up at this radio and the song that was playing was ‘I Can’t Live if living is without You’. Something about the way the man was singing it pulled at my heart lol x
Other than that there was always music in our home/homes growing up. wherever we lived. Our Dad Buster Pearson who was a brilliant musician himself became manager of 5 Star.
You have your new single ‘Like A Child’ which is out now. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?
Like a Child lyrics are in fact words from scripture, so very important! They came about as I was reading a book I love called ‘Jesus Calling’ by Sarah Young. It tell us about the stories of the bible but as we would speak in casual conversation. I guess I had a disagreement with someone which upset my spirit. So I thought id forget it! Go shower and chill out with a movie. I haven’t watched TV in 4-5 years now so my movies e devices is my Laptop top – which I program my tracks on. So something told me to open up my music project and start writing and that evening Like a Child was born. It reminds me of the J5 song ‘With a Child’s Heart’ very simple but it’s the Truth x
Was it a difficult song to write?
It came to me straight from the Heavens just like the majority of my songs on my album ‘Free~Queen~See’ x
Do you have a visualiser to accompany the track?
Yes, I found a wonderful AI creator on Instagram called Naddy_Dread2 . Her work speaks to my project in a visual sense so I contacted her. She is USA based and produces Magnificent work!
Where did you record the single and who produced it?
This single was recorded over in Essex to be precise at a studio of a good friend of mine. It’s a blessing when we find the absolute perfect work space to deliver our product as far as production & writing goes, God has blessed me to become brave enough within my self to step up to the plate as far as production goes, on All my album tracks including this one on as I should have done many years ago but everything in its appointed time I guess ⚜️
Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?
Yes!! I started my musical career while I was in Seniors so I hadn’t been presented with a chance to do naughty collegey things lol.. so I made it a point to only book into my hotel car lot and spend a couple night in my car!! …
It was Amazing!! I brought my necessities hot water bottle my blankets iPad white wine and Chrystal gold lined glasses- and picked up some cheese slices & chocolate to snack on while I watched movies! … I loved it, not only that, I wanted this to be a part of my story as something spontaneous that I did savouring this magnificent journey I’m on
Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?
Yes, A Neumann Mic always! Live musicians, my drum programmer Perry Bassist Dom and magnificent string guy Pete. They are All soo Awesome
Which of your new tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?
Most are either about positive affirmation / scripture which was intentional then we have the odd love song and there’s a very brave track inspired by the legendary Bob Marley called’ Deliverance’
Nothing angry at all – I would say my album tracks were written and composed to give a Feel good, positive and empowering feeling. Something desperately needed today ⚜️
Do you have any further music releases planned for 2025/2026?
Oh yeah baby lol, I have 26 tracks to choose from including interludes for my Album so if I’m not releasing songs from my album ‘Free~Queen~See’ then I will be releasing from the extra tracks left + more new tracks.
What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?
After a performance- Most important thing for me is that i left my audience happy!! Audience interaction is very important to me!
The day I retire sweetheart is the day I have no more breath in my lungs! I would like my audience and 5 Star fans to always carry us in their hearts because that is the gift they have given me/Us! It’s forever baby ⚜️
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?
Yes, I have my own studio set up at home, always Apple products the iMac. iPad, Laptop Apogee 3 Neumann mic! I basically only use my Mac ( laptop) for writing!
How do you look after your voice?
Workout and everyday for 45 mins usually dancing squats and weights and sing/Harmonise to Whitney Houston, Celine Deon, Mariah Carey & Ella Fitzgerald songs for to keep my vocal chords muscles in toned and tuned⚜️
You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?
‘IT horror movie – ‘The Perfect Storm’ ‘Frozen’’ Lord of the Ring’s’ Anthology I guess because they are all very dramatic especially when it comes to String arrangements!
Spooky strings, Brave strings (theme tune from The Perfect Storm is stunning!)
The Theme song from Frozen, ‘Let it Go’ makes me cry every time when she’s building her Ice castle in the middle of nowhere! I become Veeeery Emotional! …EVERY TIME

Many memories of Meeting Royalty Terry Wogan Russell Harty Too if the Pops having a cartoon strip in the ‘LOOKIN’ magazine Becoming a Grammy Nominee for my very first B side composition Winning the BPI Award for Best British Group Selling out the Sydney Opera House 2 magnificent Sold Out European Tours! Meeting George Michael and moving to Los Angeles to name a few.
What makes Deniece Pearson happy and what makes you unhappy?
Happy…..God! My children, my Music, my Beauty, Giving….
Unhappy…I do choose not to feel this way but to give healing energy…but WAR sick or hurt people/Children!! We are all connected – you are me and I am you ITS SO IMPORTANT TO HELP EACH OTHER!
