Alternative quartet Daytime TV have released a new anthem for the summer of 2026 as they announce a UK tour. Singer Will Irvine kindly chatted to us:
Who is in Daytime TV, how did you meet and what do you play?
Will Irvine (singer), John Caddick (guitar / synths), Nao Boschetti (bass / synths), Gareth Thompson (drums / drum machines)
We met in London on the pub gig scene and officially started the band in the first Covid lockdown which was obviously initially very underwhelming but gave us all something to focus on I guess. Spent way too much time on Zoom dreaming about the future.
What is your earliest musical memory?
Standing on the stairs in my parents house when I was about 5 asking them to play “Killing Me Softly” otherwise I couldn’t sleep.
When did you begin songwriting?
1st year university. As soon as I realised it was a calling for me, I basically didn’t leave my room in halls all year, to the detriment of my actual degree.
You have your new single ‘Sun’ out now. What was the story/inspiration behind the track?
Sun’ is about trying to go to your happy place in your head. Blocking out the chaos and stripping things back to the primal basics of just being an animal on a planet.
Where did you record the track and who produced it?
We did most of it at the Marshall Studio in Milton Keynes with producer Pete Hutchings (Foals, Royal Blood, Adele). Pete is an absolute beast and a great friend and the studio is so amazing. Proper state of the art place. Super lucky to get to use that. We mixed it at Pete’s studio in the south west near Hereford. Magic little place.
Do you have any interesting, funny or memorable stories from the recording sessions?
At Pete’s place we’d go for a run together in the mornings around the farmland surrounding the studio and there was this flock of sheep that we would accidentally drive into different fields every single morning. Maybe they thought we were dogs or something. Easy mistake to make. Farmer must have been so confused.
Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?
We used Royal Blood’s prophet synth (borrowed / stolen by Pete) plugged straight into the Marshall stack owned and toured by System Of A Down which happened to be at the Marshall Studio. The sound was genuinely one of the greatest dirty synth tones I’ve ever heard and will probably never be replicated.
Which of your tracks hear you at your a) happiest, b) angriest and c) most reflective?
a. Our new single ’Sun’
b. Something currently unreleased. People who’ve seen us live this year will know what I’m talking about.
c. Maybe ‘Waves’ from our EP ‘Island’.
Was it a difficult song to write?
Sun? No it was actually one of the fastest songs we ever wrote. It’s easy when you’re just being honest like that.
Do you have any visualisers to accompany the track?
We’ve filmed a wild music video with amazing videographer Sam McGill near Edinburgh recently and that’ll be coming out very soon. We were meant to have a dancer play the main role but that fell through last minute so we had to step in. That’ll make sense when you see the video.
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
Achiltibuie – BEST PLACE ON THE PLANET
How do you look after your voice?
Badly… It’s something I’m trying to be better at.
Do you have any live dates planned in the UK/Europe in 2026?
We’ve just announced a run of UK cities that we’ve never headlined in before. Places like Hull, Coventry, Cambridge, Bournemouth etc. Trying to bring our music to places that other bands don’t always go. On top of that we’ve got a bunch of other exciting stuff in the pipeline.
What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?
Give the crowd more than they expected. Leave everything on the stage.
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones etc?
I’d be nowhere without my EH POG octave pedal. Mix that in with a nice fuzz through the Marshall (JCM 900 is my weapon of choice) and you’ve got yourself a monster. Obsessed with my new Fender Jag too. His name is Ken. To be honest I’ve been been playing less guitar and leaving the heavy lifting to John and Nao who both have amazing sounds. Gives me more chance to run about and put a show on.
You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?
I know it’s already been made into a movie but I’d love to go back in time and do the music for ‘Into The Wild’ – Jon Krakauer.
Do you have any further music releases planned for 2026?
We do indeed.
Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?
We take inspo from lots of things but it’s rarely other music. Love getting inspired by world building in movies. Tarantino is a good example. We watched Django lots in the studio. In terms of recs, I’m loving a band called Mirador which our pal Chris is in, been revisiting LCD Soundsystem and The Prodigy lots. Also Caroline Polachek. Loving the new single from Mystery Jets ‘Black Sage’. Huge tune. Anything and everything that someone has poured themselves into will do for us.
What makes Daytime TV happy and what makes you unhappy?
Unhappy = Waiting
