King King
Live
(Manhaton Records)
This ensemble creates powerful and crafted studio records. Their songs are either custom-written and arranged or well-chosen. But to appreciate their firepower, interplay and deft use of light and shade – being their strongest suit – you have to see them at a live performance. These recordings were made this year and before Alan Nimmo’s sabbatical for some TLC and treatment on his throat, which we discussed with him at the band’s Crawley gig and briefly after their triumphant appearance at this year’s Ramblin’ Man Fair Festival and at which drummer Wayne Proctor mentioned some mixing he was due to tackle on this release
The live CDs were recorded at the 02 ABC Scotland and the accompanying DVD at the Picturedrome in Holmfirth. Sounds like a good time was had by all. Here’s what’s on the audio discs:
LOSE CONTROL has growling guitar warm-up sounds and Alan greeting the crowd before this thumping rocker kicks in
WAIT ON TIME is a fluid shuffle with shades of the great Freddie King and great Hammond outing by Bob Fridzema
WAKING UP works from a Sly Stone bassline by Lindsay Coulson and the band digs in
RUSH HOUR has a moody electric piano intro and Paul Rodgers-style vocal, with the crowd happily singing along
A LONG HISTORY OF LOVE has a slow grinding Southern Rock vibe..a ten-minute trip to the very soul of this group
MORE THAN I CAN TAKE wrings every dynamic out of the song right from the guitar hammer-on start and swirling organ figures through to its close
–
YOU STOPPED THE RAIN is dedicated to Stevie and is driven by an insistent guitar motif
JEALOUSY is of course the deep Frankie Miller tune, favoured by a few acts lately and here performed to an edge-of-psychotic perfection CRAZY has a battering drum commencement and rocks the venue ALL YOUR LIFE is based around funk organ and has the band using Herbie Hancock sounds to put over the number. A great inclusion
STRANGER TO LOVE gives us 13 biting minute of slow funk with an eerie undertow and possibly the best vocal on the record
LET LOVE IN closes the show in great guitar-rocked style
King King still feel like one of the home teams to us – I have known Wayne a long time now – and to see them continue their winning streak warms the heart, they are where they are by hard work and inspiration.
