Rising to the stratosphere as one of Poland’s brightest stars, LUNA, the 2024 Eurovision representative, has released her latest single ‘Wild West’. We spoke to her about the single. her voice and more:
1.When did you begin songwriting?
I started writing songs as a teenager in Poland. Music was my escape—a way to express emotions I couldn’t put into words otherwise. My early songs were like personal diaries, reflecting the struggle of finding myself and navigating a world that didn’t always feel like home.
What is your earliest musical memory?
My earliest musical memory is sitting at my piano, plucking at the keys, and being completely mesmerized by the way they could fill the entire room with sound. I remember feeling so small compared to the grand instrument, but it was fascinating to hear how even the simplest notes could change the atmosphere and transport you into a different world.
Your new single ‘Wild West’ is out now. What was the story/inspiration behind it?
Wild West” was written just before the Eurovision contest. It came from a place of uncertainty and boldness. This song gives a profound reflection on the challenges of the modern world. The song paints today’s reality as a harsh and unpredictable place where one must develop a thick skin and constantly fight for their place. It was inspired by a time when I felt completely lost and had to leave everything behind. I ended up rediscovering myself in those chaotic, uncharted moments. It’s about embracing that wild side of life, even if it’s scary, because that’s where the real growth happens. I wanted it to capture that blend of fear and excitement you feel when you’re on the edge of something new and risky, but you choose to go for it anyway.
Where did you record the song and who produced it?
“Wild West” was recorded in the cool studio in West London. I worked with Paul Dixon and who really understood the mood I wanted to create. We’ve been working together for more that two years but with this song I wanted it to feel raw and powerful, but at the same time very honest and spacious. We wanted to create a feeling of venturing into the unknown land full of endless possibilities but also challenges.
Do you have any interesting, funny, or memorable stories from the recording sessions?
One of the funniest moments during the recording of Wild West was when we decided we needed the sound of a gunshot in the track. Instead of using a typical digital sample, I thought it’d be fun to bring some props to the studio. So, I showed up with a toy gun that shot bubbles! Everyone was so confused at first, but we all ended up in fits of laughter because we started shooting bubbles everywhere in between takes. It obviously didn’t create the sound we needed, but it definitely lightened the mood and made the session unforgettable.
Did you use any particular instruments, microphones, or recording equipment to help you get a particular sound/tone for the record?
For “Wild West” I wanted to capture that raw, gritty sound you’d expect from a track with such a bold vibe. We used a vintage Shure SM7B microphone for my vocals to get that warm, slightly raspy tone. It’s one of my go-to mics because it brings out all the little nuances in my voice. There are also lots of different reverb effects that makes the vocals feel like they’re echoing in an open space, adding to the song’s expansive feel.
Was it a difficult song to write?
It was more emotionally challenging than technically difficult. Tapping into those raw feelings of being lost and finding my way back took a lot out of me, but once I started, the song almost wrote itself. It gave me so much power and joy.
What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?
I want people to feel like they’ve connected with something real and authentic. When I’m on stage, I’m sharing a piece of myself, so I hope the audience leaves feeling inspired or moved in some way. And I want them to leave with a sense of hope or energy, like they’ve been a part of something bigger than just a performance.
Do you have any favoured stage instruments, effects, pedals, microphones, etc.?
As Luna, I’d say:
When I’m performing live, I’m all about energy and connecting with the audience, so I like to keep my setup straightforward but impactful. One of my go-to stage microphones is the Shure Beta 58A—it’s got this amazing clarity and punch that really brings out the power in my voice.
For effects, I’m a big fan of a subtle reverb and delay combo, just enough to add a bit of dimension to my vocals without overwhelming the sound.
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
Warsaw: Vibrant, creative, resilient, evolving, soulful.
How do you look after your voice?
I’m trying to be more disciplined when it comes to vocal care. I focus a lot on hydration and mindfulness exercises. I’ve learned that taking care of my voice isn’t just about the physical—it’s about being in a good headspace too.
You are given the opportunity to write the score for a film adaptation of a novel that you enjoy. Which novel is it and why?
I would love to write the score for *Perfume. The story of a Murderer” I have synaesthesia and I really love scents. I think that dark, mysterious, and romantic atmosphere of this book could be beautifully expressed through music. It’s full of tension, twists, secrets, and intense emotions, and I feel like my style would suit its haunting and lyrical quality perfectly.
Who are some of your musical influences? Do you have any recommendations?
I’m influenced by artists who break boundaries and explore the emotional depths of their art, like Kate Bush and Björk. I’d recommend listening to *Homogenic* by Björk if you haven’t—it’s a stunning mix of vulnerability and strength, with incredible production that still feels fresh and innovative today.
Who created/designed the single artwork?
The artwork was created by Nik Pate, who I’ve recently collaborated with. We just met in London. We wanted something that visually reflects the wild, untamed energy of the song. We incorporated rich, golden tones and intricate details, which give the cover a sense of elegance while still maintaining that rugged, adventurous feel of the song. The way he used lighting and textures almost makes the image feel like a painting—it’s mysterious, bold, and full of character, just like Wild West!
16. Do you have any further music releases planned for 2024/2025?
Yes! Absolutely! I’m really excited to share that my album, No Rest, is set to be released on November 15th, 2024. It’s been a labor of love, and I can’t wait for everyone to hear the full range of sounds and stories I’ve been working on. The album explores themes of restlessness, chaos, dreams, and embracing the unexpected—it’s got everything from bold, high-energy tracks to more introspective moments.
In the new year, I hope for some amazing collaborations lined up with a few artists I’ve always admired. I don’t want to give too much away just yet, but let’s just say 2025 is going to be full of surprises and exciting new music.
Do you have any live dates planned in the UK/Europe in 2024/2025?
Yes, I’m planning to tour Europe in 2025, with some shows in the UK as well. I’m excited to connect with the audience there and share these new songs live. I’ll be sharing some new material, and I have a few surprises in store!
What makes LUNA happy and what makes you unhappy?
Creating music and seeing people resonate with it makes me happy. Being free, creative and surrounded by people makes me the happiest. Feeling stagnant or creatively blocked makes me unhappy—it’s like being disconnected from who I am. Also seeing people not being true to themselves or being held back by fear. I believe that everyone has something beautiful and unique to share, and it’s sad to see potential go untapped.
