Which of your own recordings finds you at your most reflective?
The song “Sandra” from my EP “Photographs and Faces” would be the song. It is a song I wrote for my late sister. It allowed me to back to our childhood together and to grieve her passing.
There’s Church in your voice – was that where you first sang?
I trained as a Classical Singer and yes I did sing in churches at that time. I suppose the technique has left traces in the voice.
The third track on an album is often a gem – can you think of any? (artist/title/source album) – as many as you like!!!
Joan Armatrading ‘s “No More Pain “ from the album “Not Too Far Away”
Divine Comedy (Neil Hannon) “Catherine the Great” from the album “Foreverland”
Annie Lennox’s “Smithereens” from the album “Songs of Mass Destruction”
How do you look after your voice? Any tips for aspiring singers heading for the stage?
The only answer is a healthy life with lots of rest for the mind and body.
Suggest a song by any artist that makes you think of the countryside …please add any reasons as to why this might be…
I think of Bob Dylan’s “Blowin in the Wind” . When I listen to this song it takes me to a hill in the countryside of Somerset as I look down on the valley.
Please tell us about the song ‘Lost’
Lost is story about a very difficult moment in my life that took a toll on my marriage. There was a need for more communication and privacy. After a brief separation, we reconciled and are now stronger together.
Your style makes me think of a younger Petula Clark …is she an artist you have ever listened to?
Yes, I did listen to her as a child. Her song “Downtown” was something my Mum listened to all the time.
A recording that makes you laugh ….intentionally or otherwise! (artist/track/source album)
The Frog Princess by The Divine Comedy
You are invited to duet with Andrea Bocelli – what song (by any artist or writer you like) do you suggest you perform?
I would choose Gershwin’s – “Summertime”
Where are you planning to perform next?
I am now planning performances in Bath as I live in Bradford on Avon. I like the vibe in small concert halls and wine bars.
Which artist did you go to see perform with low expectations but ended up impressed? Where and when was this?
I never actually booked tickets to a performance that I did not rate. So I must apologise that I cannot answer this question properly.
Where in the world in your opinion is live music best received? What venues appeal?
I believe the UK, the USA, Asia – I believe that the venue is not as important as the performer. People who are avid followers of a performer or band will flock to wherever they are.
Can you dance? Do you dance? How do your family rate your dancing?
Yes, I can dance and I love dancing! How does my family rate my dancing?
Maybe an 8? I would say a 9 though … ha ha .
Name a recording (an album maybe) that really ‘grew’ on you and has ended up as essential listening? What is it about this recording that you value?
Joni Mitchells’ album “Blue”. There is depth to the lyrics in all the songs in this album. The words to a song is of utmost importance.
Suggest a song that reminds you of your childhood – and why might this be?
The song “I left My Heart In San Francisco”. My Mum used to sing it everyday as she did the dishes in the kitchen. It was lovely to hear my mother sing as she had a beautiful voice.
What have you worn on stage that makes you laugh now?
I was cast in an opera in New York and had to wear peasant’s outfit that had to be matched with a wig as I had short hair. I felt funny wearing a wig!
Is there a book or novel that you would like to create songs or the score for? Why is this?
My favourite novel is “Out of Africa” by Karen Blixen. It was later made into a movie. It would be a challenge and honour to write a song for this novel.
Pete Sargeant
