Oregon alt-pop trio We Three have a new album out called ‘Love Me’ and will be touring the UK and Ireland in Autumn 2023. We chatted to them about their music and touring:
Could you please introduce yourselves to us by telling the readers your names and who plays what in the band?
Hello! Joshua is the oldest sibling and plays drums and keys and BGVs, Bethany is the middle and plays bass and vocals, Manny is the youngest and plays guitar, lead vocals and every now and then pulls out the trumpet.
Where is your hometown and could you please describe it in five words?
We live in a little town in the Oregon wine country. 5 words….hmmmm, beautiful, quaint, fun, ambitious, growing.
You recently released your lead single ‘In Therapy’. What was the thought process/inspiration behind this song?
Manny wrote this shortly after he started therapy. It’s an un-sugar-coated look into his mindset at the time; struggles, fears, insecurities, etc. It’s all about how therapy can be terrifying as you relive and getting to the root of all your shit. But he really wanted to end with kind of a party atmosphere since that’s the other side of therapy. The goal is to get to the other side and to become more free.
Do you have any favoured stage instruments/effects/pedals?
For Bethany, it’d definitely be her bass. It was hand made by our uncle…he’s incredible. For Manny, it’d be his beat-up Strat. For Joshua, definitely the computer software that lets him change sound patches without pressing a button haha!
How do you look after your voices?
Lots of little things! First of all, you have to know your voice, ‘cause what works for some people doesn’t work for others and vice versa. Singing daily for sure…. it’s like a muscle. We also try to pay attention to speech and how we talk throughout the day to keep things as healthy as possible.
Your latest album is entitled ‘Love Me’. How did you want to approach the making of this record?
We didn’t actually come at this project with a specific intent or approach, it just kinda fell together. There were a bunch of songs that had been written and we felt it was time to start taking a step back and seeing what the common thread between them was.
Would you say that this was a difficult album to write?
In many ways, yes. Possibly the most difficult one to write. This one was intense. Lots of emotions and heavy topics to deal with. One thing interesting we noticed, once the record was just about finished, was that there were no simple love songs. Every “love song” had at least one lyric that kinda made you do a double take and realize that it wasn’t as simple or happy as it sounded.
Do you have any plans to support your new album with a UK tour and if so, where are you playing?
We’ll be playing all over the UK! Starting in Newcastle on October 22nd and ending in London on October 30th. We’re beyond excited to be back over the pond.
What two things do you hope to have achieved once you have left the stage?
If we can leave the stage knowing that people had an experience, that they felt something and are maybe even a little less alone. If we can do that, it’d be pretty rad!
What makes We Three happy and what makes you unhappy?
You’d certainly get a different answer from each of us individually, but collectively we’re happiest when we’re writing and performing and meeting fans of the music. And most unhappy when we’re not out doing that.
We Three’s fourth album ‘Love Me’ is out now via Palawan Productions. In addition, the group will perform eight dates across the UK and Ireland, starting at Newcastle Riverside on October 22nd and finishing at The Academy, Dublin on November 1st.
