Lisa Bassenge – ‘Canyon Songs’ New Album Announcement
In October 2015, the Berlin-based jazz vocalist Lisa Bassenge releases Canyon Songs, on MPS Records (MPS Records is a German jazz record label founded in 1968. MPS stands for “Musik Produktion Schwarzwald” (Music Production Black Forest), a hypnotic selection of tracks inspired by the landscape and atmosphere of Los Angeles and Southern California.
Recorded by Grammy award-winning producer Larry Klein (Herbie Hancock, Madeleine Peyroux, Till Bronner, Melody Gardot, Tracy Chapman, Joni Mitchell), Canyon Songs covers classic hits and hidden gems from golden eras of LA song writing, including songs written by The Doors, Brian Wilson, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Stephen Stills, Shuggie Otis, Elliot Smith and Tom Waits, all expertly adapted, beautifully crafted and performed in Bassenge’s sultry and inimitable style.
Accompanied by a wealth of musical talent including the multi award-winning trumpeter Till Bronner, brilliant guitarist Thomas Dybdahl and widely celebrated drummer Vinnie Colaiuita, Bassenge provides captivating interpretations of a wide range of music, all of which retains a mesmerising and atmospheric, ‘Southern-Californian’ vibe.
The album is a departure from Bassenge’s previous work with the likes of Pee Wee Ellis, Fred Wesley, Demba Nabé and the WDR Big Band, providing existing fans with a new perspective and attracting a new audience with her discerning collection of modern repertoire.
Canyon Songs is a sensitive and soothing album with a melancholic air, enhanced by Klein’s understanding of Lisa Bassenge’s unique vocal tones.
