Singaporean singer-songwriter Jonny Ong has been releasing singles over the past year as a taste of what audio delight is to come with his forthcoming full-length album. Continuing with this approach, Ong has shared the release of his latest single ‘The Ballad of J and J (Are We Over)’.
Enlisting the talents of Cuban-born trumpet and flugelhorn player Yelfris Valdés for the sophisticated string arrangements, the sombre keyboards dance alongside Jonny Ong’s crisp handpan to build an atmosphere for the listener.
Influenced by the likes of The Beatles and Miles Davis amongst others, Jonny Ong has created this hauntingly beautiful piece of music to accompany his autobiographical lyrics that really do make you think- well it worked for ‘Eleanor Rigby’!
Interestingly, the lead vocal is at times reminiscent of Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys and it has a real textured quality that is perfect for radio airplay. The heartfelt lyrics including “I am lost without you, I am lost without me too” convey themes of a relationship breakdown and isolation. The track is relatable given the global Coronavirus restrictions and Jonny has managed to truly capture that.
