Lapels — The Life & Times (Single)
When it was officially announced that the Marquee Club brand would branch out with a record label Marquee Records in 2021 it was a fantastic way to not only keep the legendary name alive but to also become a platform for the rising stars coming through in the UK music scene.
One of the label’s first signings was East Midlands four-piece Lapels and they have already released their singles ‘Warning Lights’ and ‘All Things Down To You’ to critical acclaim. Forming in 2018, Nathan (lead vocals, songwriter guitar and piano) and Andy (singer, guitarist, songwriter) struck up a friendship at college in Nottingham and soon began gigging with Will (Bass) and Adam (Drums). The band name is due to the fact that as they were all wearing jackets at the time and ‘lapels’ was the first word that connected them all.
They have released their third single ‘The Life & Times’ in late February 2022 keeping that energy of Britpop alive. The acoustic guitar intro is upbeat and summery as Nathan’s radio-friendly vocal pours out of the speakers. Fans of Arctic Monkeys and The Last Shadow Puppets will enjoy the slick indie production with Adam’s rhythmic drumming blending with the groovy bassline from Will.
The electric guitar from Andy is very psychedelic in tone not dissimilar to some Oasis material as the vocal harmonies rise majestically like a phoenix.
Overall, ‘The Life & Times’ is the perfect mix of Britpop homage and modern indie from a band that have a solid understanding of songwriting and production and with the mighty Marquee Records championing them I really hope that we hear more from Lapels and with material of this quality the festival appearances and gigs should not be far behind.
