Majick Potion EP

(Maybe Records)

The rock trio LeoGun first came on my music radar when I arrived onsite at Ramblin Man Fair festival on Saturday 23rd July 2016. They were the first band to perform on the Rising Star stage and travelled from London to Maidstone, Kent to entertain music fans in the sun.

Their sound of rhythmic guitar rock went down a storm and at the end of the set the crowd surged forward to meet the band and grab a copy of their four-track EP ‘Majick Potion’. Luckily, I managed to purchase a copy and I have decided to review the release.

Firstly, before even pressing play you are greeted with a detailed front cover of a Native American Indian in official headdress  which is designed by John Wigger and Tommy Smith (Lead Vocalist and Guitarist). The artwork is clever because it doesn’t give away the band’s sound and is in keeping with the band’s official logo.

The EP title track opens this release and the drums from Michael Lloyd kick in straight away as Smith uses special effects and microphone to create an eerie echo on his vocals. The guitar solo swirls around Matt Johnson’s tight bass and from a sequence perspective, it was sensible for them to open with this as it hits your ears

My favourite track ‘Disconnected’ has vocals that remind me of The Hoosiers whilst at the same time sounding similar to Glenn Hughes during his short-lived project California Breed. Smith doesn’t hold anything back especially on the memorable one-worded chorus and in a live setting this showcases all the band’s skills perfectly.

‘Beauty Queen’ has guitar which is a tad screechy at times but the fluid rhythm section and well-written lyrics of this number make it a very listenable piece.

Closing track ‘It’s Okay’ let’s us hear LeoGun’s softer side and like music by acts such as The Beauty Room and Turin Brakes it is incredibly therapeutic  and allows you to just close your eyes and sit back.

In conclusion, I enjoyed this release by LeoGun and although they haven’t deviated from the rock music formula too much it is original enough to warrant it a listen on your CD player or computer now as I believe this outfit has a real chance of following in the footsteps of bands such as The Temperance Movement, Blues Pills and others. Nice work lads…
