Marty Wilde — Running Together
Marty Wilde MBE has been making music and performing since 1958 in his own right and has also penned songs for the likes of Sir Tom Jones, Adam Faith and Lulu to name a few. His latest offering, ‘Running Together’ is actually his first-ever album of all-original self-penned or co-written and he has even made it a thoroughly family affair.
The opening title track has a twinkling piano and hears Wilde in a reflective mood with its Sixties sounding production. A future live favourite I think. The harmonies on ‘Dublin’ are glorious and the textured vocal is easy on the ear. ‘So Undecided’ features his youngest daughter Roxanne Rizzo Wilde on lead vocals and was written especially for her and it is a touching moment. Celebrating the Sixties, Marty duets with his other daughter Kim Wilde on ‘60s World’ and it transports you back and sounds like The Beach Boys at times.
The steady drumbeat on ‘Cambodia’ works with the emotional lyrics. ‘Love Me Love My Dog’ is the 1975 number three UK chart Peter Shelley hit and has a rhythmic acoustic guitar as he explains to a potential partner that she has to accept his dog as well as him for the relationship to work. The Reggae sounding ‘So Light’ is an interesting inclusion with the sunny horn section and puts a smile on your face.
‘Rockabilly Dreams’ is full of Fifties charm and if you enjoy Joe Brown or The Stray Cats this one is for you. ‘So Wide Awake (The Wedding Song)’ uses bells and a lovely organ backing and whilst it is not a standard blues number the sentiments of love and togetherness are clear.
Closing track ‘Eddie’ is a tale of Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent both coming to England to tour and the raw emotion in Marty Wilde’s voice pours through the speakers.
In summary, Marty Wilde’s Running Together will appeal to people who have been following his career from the beginning but because of the high production values, the quality of the songwriting and the overall warm feeling conveyed there truly is something for everyone on this strong body of work.
