Time Dilation Unit – Topsy The Elephant
If you are searching for your next band to book for your Burner Party, on an artist’s salary, of course, search no further. Hold your little steampunk hats for Time Dilation Unit is here to save you with their latest and 6th track, Topsy the Elephant.
For those of you who are not familiar with the life and times of Topsy the Elephant (as you probably don’t hail from NYC like me, or study Circus history), poor Topsy was the cruel victim of electrocution for entertainment at the turn of the 20th Century in Coney Island.
I’m not sure what this self-hailed “psychedelic new-wave art-punk” band’s aim is. Is this the soundtrack of Greta Thunberg’s speaker series? Move over Sarah McLachlan, late-night animal cruelty PSAs have found their new song in the year 2050. What is uncountably good about this fab fivesome is their commitment to their aesthetic and their craft. However, their zaniness leads more to the side of “what the actual f**k” then parody. I want to think they are cool? But ultimately I find them confusing. This may be your new favourite band if you indulge in psychedelics, enjoy a cacophony of sounds, or their sci-fi futurist shtick speaks to you directly.
I wish other bands had their budget, artistry, and vision, and that they had other bands musicality. Either way, as Time Dilation Unit would say, “Welcome to the Wormhole”.
Topsy the Elephant is available 21st February on Wormhole Records with a limited edition CD for collectors. Catch them on Spotify, Soundcloud, and my nightmares.
