The SoapGirls
These female troublemakers are from South Africa and make a formidable duo..in fact I am convinced that Mille is not from this planet. They wear very little and shower their audiences with forceful punkrock, snarling songs that do show some inspirations (see answers) and have complete control over the crowd, using this to insist upon cooperation, humiliation or whatever takes their fancy. If there ever was such a thing as Girl Power, you will find it here. I have surrendered, as did images man John Bull but there again we were not made to eat raw fish on stage , unlike an industry colleague….enjoy these smart lasses’ responses..

Suggest two or three great drum intro’s to songs or instrumentals – any genre (tune /artist/ source album)
I’m crazy about the drum intro on Marilyn Manson’s The Beautiful People, Joan Jett’s version of Do You Wanna Touch and I love the drums on Nirvana’s Territorial Pissings ( get this act on Desert Island Discs ! – PS)
Back In South Africa did you get to hear The Runaways? Blondie? The Cramps? The Detroit Cobras? The Stooges? and which of these have influenced you as a musician and writer?
We were very lucky to be exposed to amazing artists across all genres and generations, Blondie, The Stooges and the Runaways are still favourites although I’m a massive grunge and metal lover for the depth of the lyrics, vocals and musicianship
A recording that makes you laugh ….intentionally or otherwise! (artist / track / source album)
I want to laugh and pretend I can dance whenever I hear Boney M’s Daddy Cool
Imagine that Iggy Pop and Grace Jones record a duet – what song do they sing? Who backs them?
They sing Marilyn Manson’s version of Sweet dreams;);)and they are backed by Maria Brink from In This Moment
I love Hater, Why Don’t You, Bad Bitch and Pretty Good Looking..what’s the inspiration for that last song?
Thank you JJ That one we wrote after a show it was a reflection on the behaviour of the crowd of student and the “hook up” culture whilst doing copious amounts of drugs and mostly a guy in another band I had felt an attraction to until I got to watch him in actionJ
Describe your dream ultimate stage outfit – we love the ones we have seen!
Thank you ;);) We are lucky to be working with a very creative manager SamJJ This can be a hard one but I’d probably pick a cutaway body suit made of giant scales , a pair of white thigh high spiked and studded boots and a giant devilish tiara with a buttoned neck collar covered with anarchy signs encrusted with black eye balls
Which of your own recordings show you at your most a/ aggressive b/ relaxed c/ confused?
Step Outside is where I hold nothing back, Waiting In The Wings is the most relaxed I can be and Cigarettes and Medicine was written after a break up which was a very confusing time
Which artist did you go to see perform with low expectations but ended up impressed? Where and when was this?
No artist that I’m dying to see has ever performed in South Africa so I cannot answer that question
Where in the world in your opinion is live music best received? What venues appeal?
Definitely the UK and Germany! Any venue that has a love of music, appeals we have performed some of our best shows at what would be termed a “toilet” gig and have been honoured to perform at some festivals like Rock and Bike and being able to perform and engage with a large rocking crowd definelty appeals there are also some famous venues that appeal where there is everything from great sound to stage lights and mostly a supporting crowd.
Two tickets suddenly arrive for a live performance, they are for someone you have always wanted to see…….which act or artist? And which numbers will be hoping to hear?
Marilyn Manson and I’d definitely want to hear Disposable Teens, Lunchbox and Sweet Dreams

Mie:
Has a radio DJ anywhere (and any era) ever impressed you and if so why?
Definitely Graham Norton because he has a passion for life and people says it like it is and has a great sense of humour I think he has brought a lot to both radio and television both myself and Mille look up to this man as we can identify with a lot that he is about and insert laughing face here but he is Irish and good looking ?? ( errr….PS) If Mille ever got hold of him she’d definelty have him eating something extraordinary JJ
Can you dance? Do you dance? How do your family rate your dancing?
I like to think I can J enjoy dancing especially to really cheesey 80’s music.
Name a recording (an album maybe) that really ‘grew’ on you and has ended up as essential listening? What is it about this recording that you value?
Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours – every song on that album is a masterpiece and listening to it with your eyes closed is almost like being in the music the biggest thing that sticks out for me is the timelessness of this album it’s incredible.
Your spiky guitar solo’s are a delight – any chance you might do more of them?
Thank you J yeah definitely I’m a feel player so I play what I feel!
You both seem to control your audiences…do feminists understand this and generally what you’re doing?
We are only creating a space in which people can be and come as they please our message is all about freedom to be besides we don’t see ourselves as separate to the audience they are very much a part of all that we doJ With regards feminists we haven’t taken any criticisms into consideration nor stopped to see who does or doesn’t get it.
What has she (Mille) ever worn that made you laugh?
A feathered crotch it was hilarious!
Is there a book or novel that you would like to create songs or the score for? Why is this?
The Novel Fallen by Lauren Kate because the storyline is that of a paranormal romance so I could really play around with textures and sound besides it is full of emotion that you can feel.
Which of the current setlist songs do you enjoy playing onstage the most?
I’d have to say the song Black Mass!!
Explain your choices of stage guitars ….and do you always use standard tuning?
I’m an Ibanez freak so they are the only make I’ll ever touch right now I switch between my Ibanez mirror JEM77 BRMR and my Ibanez EM70V-SFG not only is the craftsmanship and attention to detail exquisite they sound and feel amazing they really are a joy to play!!It depends on the song really but I am a fan of standard tuning and drop D tuning
You have the most innocent face – did this keep you out of trouble at school? And what song most reminds you if school?
Haha wow thanks 😉 Pete – it helped when I was younger I was really naughty but I calmed down as I got older! I’d have to say Don’t Worry Be Happy by Bobby McFerrin.
