Let’s Go is the seventh release from Canada’s hillbilly trio Cousin Harley and was recorded in early Spring 2020 at Afterlife Studios in Vancouver. Led by Gretsch endorsee Paul Pigat who not only wrote every song on the record but also produced, we begin with ‘Right Back At Blues’ that just swings with Keith Picot’s double bass and Jesse Cahill’s drum tone as the fluid rhythm section.
Opener ‘Going To London’ features a horn section which was built around US saxophone virtuoso Sax Gordon and whilst it has a rich full sound it is more Las Vegas than London. The drum intro from Alex Lex on the title track sets the scene for this swinging tune that would not be out of place in a late night jazz club atmosphere.
Heavyman are a four-piece London-based hard rock band Their debut EP ‘Beautiful Place’ opens with ‘Baby Jean’ with a punchy rock electric guitar riff from Nick Burns as a pulsating drumbeat pours out the speakers. A solid start gentleman.
The twins’ latest release finds them in a good place, working decent venues and festivals and producing new material that develops their fresh-air harmonic flow into one or two new lyrical areas. The images and design are a credit to the originators.
A release from the loose cannon Eric Gales always turns out to be intriguing. I reckon this is because he will listen to Holst, Howlin’ Wolf, Herbie Hancock..to Blues, bluegrass, Brahms and Billie Holiday – and that could be one of my record shelves.
Using an album title suggested by Marie Trout, wife of Walter through some grim times and now this more pastoral and pleasingly creative period, this release gives fans something different.

The quirky musician/singer/songwriter/lensman/designer returns with a new set of compositions. This is an artist who seems to avoid rehashing past successes yet many of his records strike a chord with the public and become performance favourites.
We have followed and indeed featured this songstress and performer for some time now, as she criss-crosses the Atlantic to write, rehearse, record and collaborate on her music. Which is best described as country-inflected songs and balladry that..well, travels.
This album rocks like a bitch, but allows for some more tender music. Some of my favourite albums – from The Doors’ Strange Days onwards – pretty much fit that description and this collection is joining them. Matlock is aware of the past but doesn’t live there – most of this record is new or recent material, the one version included is an inspired choice.
It is a little surprising that the music of the agile pianist and driven singer Jamie Cullum has not been used more often in films. His memorable sonic contributions to the haunting Clint Eastwood Gran Torino movie showed his range and sensitivity, so much so that the pieces recorded for that thriller stand up well as individual listening.
